THE UNEXPECTED DEATH
THE UNEXPECTED DEATH"The Unexpected Death", a story panel intaglio print, Jody Cross, 2010.  This art piece is about a reoccurring dream I used to have for years since childhood. In this nightmare, an unusually massive wolf spots me in a dark setting and immediately begins to take an attack stance.  It's fur spikes up on it's back, it bears its huge teeth, growling loudly.  I freeze in my tracks, paralyzed with fear, my mind racing on how to escape the situation.   There's no time, the wolf lunges at me, mouth wide open, going straight for my throat and knocking me to my back on the ground.  I am pushing its face away from mine as it snaps wildly and I can feel its breathe in my eyes and on my face.  We struggle for a while until I loose my mind, and from out of nowhere I find unusual strength.  Somehow I overpower it and (depending on which time I've had the dream) snap it's neck, or break it's jaw wide open, thus destroying the beast instantly!  The last panel you see me carrying the deceased beast, and I am sad.  Even though I had to kill it to survive, my heart feels broken over the loss of such an exquisite animal.  And I feel some kind of awe in the dream at the raw power of my own hands to be able to destroy such a mighty creature.  Just like that, a struggle, fear, and death.

Little Bird Brain, I
Little Bird Brain, I"Little Bird Brain, I", intaglio print, Jody Cross, 2010.WARNING!  THIS TRUE STORY BELOW IS NOT FOR THE FAINT-HEARTED, READ AT YOUR OWN RISK: Another artwork based on nightmares, but also based on a true story.  One day right after returning from a month long trip to Ireland, I was feeling reverse culture shock and out in my backyard for fresh air.  I stumbled upon a fallen baby pigeon who lay wounded and dying after falling from it's next way up in the tree branch above.  I picked it up and took it inside.  Flys had already been landing on it and laid eggs in a wound on its head, and maggots had hatch eating the poor birds flesh as it lay alive.  I was of course disgusted and afraid of the circumstance, but I tried my best to wash this still alert bird, remove these pests from its head, and feed it.  It seemed to be struggling so much to eat, but it wanted to live.  After some time, I was exhausted.  I made it a little nest bed in a warm place, and I went to bed.  That night I had a horrible nightmare about the maggots taking over the flesh of its brain, and I felt horrified enough to snap awake.  I got up and went to check on the baby pigeon.  Upon looking into the nest my nightmare became a reality.  More eggs had hatched into maggots and were eating at the birds head once again.  I almost threw up, but again washed the bird as I cried for it.  The next morning I took the baby to my vet and begged them to take it from me and care for it.  A kind woman there did, and a few days later reported that the little guy was cleaned up, but passed in the night.  This dream and reality tormented me for days, so I decided to make a piece of art both commemorating the bravery of this little baby bird, and working through the horrors that wouldn't leave my memory.  Yes, this is the baby bird laid struggling to survive, and yes those are hundreds of maggots, just like in my nightmare.  Though the process of making this art, it healed my bad memories, and reminded me of how precious life is, and how brave this little baby was.
